Frequently asked about the Beefeaters: Why are they called Beefeaters? The Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London — popularly known as Beefeaters — have guarded the Tower since at least 1485. The nickname is thought to derive from their historic right to eat as much beef as they wished from the royal table. Today there are 37 Yeoman Warders, all of whom must be retired from the Armed Forces with at least 22 years of service. They also serve as the official guardians of the Crown Jewels.
